How do you give a bottle of wine?
My parents always get wine as a gift for Christmas, Easter, their anniversary, etc. They aren’t really particular about the taste. They receive so many bottles and don’t really prefer one over another. I wanted to do some red wine/ cheese/ cracker gift baskets for my in-laws and I suggested it to my boss who in response asked me if I knew what type of red wine they drank. I don’t know though. Since I am not a wine drinker I’m not sure of these things. Does it really matter what type of red wine or are certain ones better/worse? Are people really particular about the wine they drink? Can I just ask the employees at the liquor store what they suggest? Do I have to find out their preference or can I just go to the store and see what they suggest?

Good to find out if they drink white or red (or rose) and if they prefer dry or sweet.
try any wine from France the closer to Champagne region the better
so anything that has Picardie, Alsace and try Poitou Charentes
You never go wrong if you buy the expensive wines from France, Italy and also California. It would be very enlightening if you try to find out the preferences of people that you intend to give the wine. Wines have so many varieties or classes, and it could be confusing sometimes. But to make things simple, just try the red and the white varieties. So there you are. Of course, you can also ask suggestions from the store what to buy, say as to the most bought wines or most tasty and classy ones.
Good luck to you.

I love your idea of the gift baskets. Perfect.
Does it really matter what type of red wine or are certain ones better/worse?
No, it does not really matter but avoid any kind of red sparkling variety. I suggest Merlo or Shiraz but the list is vast.
Are people really particular about the wine they drink?
Some people are but most wine drinkers are pretty relaxed. It’s like anything – we all have certain preferences. Don’t worry too much.
Can I just ask the employees at the liquor store what they suggest?
Yes, this is a great way to find good wines. The staff will be only too happy to help. Just remember that the staff will try to sell you more expensive bottles (it’s their job!) so suggest a price point to stick to. $20 will buy you a very nice bottle. There is no need to spend any more than that.
Do I have to find out their preference or can I just go to the store and see what they suggest?
Just go to the wine shop and browse…and ask the staff. Don’t worry about the in-law’s preferences as long as there is nothing you know for sure they really hate. Part of the wine drinking experience is trying new styles / varieties.
Buy wine from the well known wine producing countries. Everyone thinks of French wine first but they have been pretty much left behind by others. Choose a wine from Australia, or USA (California). New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is usually good (it’s a white variety though) but it’s overpriced.
