Wine and cheese lovers.?
I would like to put together a wine basket for my brother for x-mas who loves all kinds of wine a good cheeses.I live in a small town in Ohio so no access to imported stores,and I like to make it personal by not ordering a ready to go gift basket.So what good(not brake the bank) wines should I put in it,I know he loves Cabernet Sauvignon,and port,but I have no idea when it comes to names and don’t want to ask not to apoil the suprise.And what else besides the wine,I mean a mini wine rack or a single wine holder or a decanter?Cheese and cracker,or cheese and a nice cheese cutter set?What would make a perfect wine lover’s basket after all.Thanks in advance.

Port is problematic, but i would select a tawny port over a ruby port
For a cabernet something not too expensive.
cheese and crackers, so I would get a hard, a medium and a soft cheese
I too love Cabernet Sauvignon. I would definately get him the Cab … regardless of other wines you decide get.
limberger cheese is my favorite. DEFINETLY look into that one.
Heitz Cabernet is fantastic, the 2002 and 2003 are really good and a bit less expensive than the 2001. Will probably run you about $25.00. A really good Chardonnay that he would appreciate is Connudrum and it’s only around $12.
I would also put in 2 large red wine glasses.
Other ideas are the pumps that suck out the oxygen so you can cork the wine after opening and drink later.
Lastly, I love your idea of cheese and a cheese cutter set.
I say to get a nice basket and put a red and white checkered napkin inside with smoked gouda cheese, edam cheese, smoked parmesean and Dublinger Irish cheese, and Guiness cheese along with three bottles of wine, one Merlot, Cabernet and a Chardonay, I recommend Yellow Tail wines, add a dipping oil, (olive oil) and some Cabot crackers. and yes add a cheese cutter.
California Cabernet’s are great- try to find Blackstone or Cartlidge & Brown ( or ask at the wine store- you can get a great Cabernet for 10 bucks.) Cheese may be more of a problem if you don’t live near a good cheese store-if he likes bleu cheese, it goes great with cabernet, if not, find a good sharp cheddar. Chocolate is a good idea for a wine basket as well, and so are pears ( especially if you do go with the bleu cheese) Add a nice cheese board with a cutter.
